Our History

 
  • 1958: The original name of UTech was the Jamaica Institute of Technology; just over 50 students were enrolled and only four programmes were offered.
  • 1959: The name was changed to the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST)
     
  • 1964: UTech’s incorporation into the CAST scheme was validated by an Act of Parliament
     
  • 1986: CAST Scheme was revised to make UTech a degree-granting institution; the University was also empowered to conduct affairs under two Statutory Bodies (i.e. Governing Council & Academic Board)
     
  • 1995: UTech was formally accorded University status on September 1,1995
     
  • 1999: UTech’s Student population rose to over 6,000
     
    • Over 100 programmes at Certificate, Diploma & Degree levels
    • Academic offerings & development modeled on English Polytechnic
    • Emphasis on flexibility of approach, work-based learning, professional linkages.
    • Several programmes franchised through links with Community Colleges
