Errald W. Miller

There’s a
special ring to the name Errald Miller, not because of the robust
demeanour that he portrays but from the historic rise of an
extraordinary Jamaican to fill the top position of Chief Executive
Officer of Cable & Wireless West Indies Limited.
An engineer by profession, Errald
Miller’s ascent up the corporate ladder was no ordinary feat, but the
scope of this individual, his low tolerance for mediocrity, his self
confidence and impressive educational background, made him a worthy
candidate for the top job.
From training manager of the Jamaica
Telephone Company some 30 years ago, Errald now ably steers the
administration of the highly complex business of Cable & Wireless West
Indies, determining policy and procedure to ensure that the Caribbean
remains on the cutting edge of telecommunications technology.
Errald Miller is an astute student
who seems to sail through examinations without much flurry. He now
holds a degree of Master of Business Administration from Nova
Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, a post graduate diploma in
Applied Physics from the University of the West Indies, and a diploma
in Engineering from the College of Arts, Science and Technology, now
the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech). In addition, Errald has
completed numerous industry training programmes at various
institutions in Sweden and France.
Errald has displayed the qualities of
a good teacher---he has a way of simplifying complex details and
giving confidence to his fellow students or his employees. At various
times he was part-time lecturer and adjunct faculty member of the
School of Engineering at UTech.
He is known for his assistance to the
University in tailoring specialised training programmes for
telecommunications personnel. He was a member the University of the
West Indies Council (Mona) and member of the board of the National
Foundation for Development of Science and Technology.
He has also shared his expertise
serving as a director on the boards of various organisations namely
the National Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology,
the Multicare Foundation of Jamaica, Mona Institute of Business
Jamaica, Jamaica Digiport, Telecommunicatons Services of Trinidad and
Tobago, and Barbados External Communications. The Advisory Committee
of the University of Technology School of Engineering has also
benefited from his expertise.
A hobbyist when he finds time to
spare, Errald likes to put his composite knowledge of things technical
into practice. He is reported to have single-handedly wired his own
house, designed his own water heating system and many on the CB radio
network may be flabbergasted to know he is constantly incognito on the
airwaves. Gifted with a deep sense of humour, one cannot but notice
his bellowing and infectious laughter.
Errald Miller continues to shine as
an exemplary alumnus of the University of Technology, Jamaica. He
already holds the honour of the award ‘For Sterling Contribution to
Education and National Development from UTech, and the Distinguished
Alumni Achievement Award from Nova Southeastern University.
He has combined dedication, devotion
and humility to the duties entrusted upon him as a corporate giant, an
all-embracing family man, a trustworthy friend and more recently to
the ‘portfolio’ of husband to the endearing Honourable Portia
Simpson-Miller. With his skills at diplomacy and his management savvy,
we have little doubt that Errald Miller will remain a very hard act to
follow.
Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, The
UTech Alumni Association honours an outstanding alumnus, Errald
Miller, as the first inductee in its Hall of Fame.
