Financial Aid

 

Throughout the academic year the University assists students by administering a wide variety of awards, bursaries and scholarships donated by firms, industrial enterprises, government agencies and concerned individuals. These are normally awarded on the basis of performance at the University after the student's first or second year.

 

Purpose

The purpose of the Financial Aid Programme at the University is to assist students who have demonstrated financial need. Funds utilized for student financial aid come mainly from the following sources:

  1. The Jamaican Government Student Support Fund (available to Jamaican nationals who are not holders of scholarships or bursaries in excess of J$10,000).
  2. Student Welfare Fund
  3. Harvard Business Club

 

Sources of Funds

Financial assistance falls into three main categories, viz.,

  1. GRANTS: Demonstrated need; no repayment.
  2. EMERGENCY LOANS: Repayment within specified time frames.
  3. PART-TIME EMPLOYMENT:
    1. University Earn and Study Programme (On-Campus)
    2. Off-Campus part-time employment

 

Categories of Assistance

In addition to demonstrating financial need, all financial aid applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • be currently registered students of the University
  • be a first, second or third year student
  • be making satisfactory academic progress

 

Regional & International Funding

A number of regional and international funding agencies provide scholarships and training awards to overseas Caribbean students wishing to study at the University:

  • Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA)
  • Caribbean Development Bank (CDB)
  • Commonwealth Fund For Technical Co-operation (CFTC)
  • United Kingdom Ministry of Overseas Development (UK/WIST)
  • Organisation of American States (OAS)
  • Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO)
  • United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

 

Requirements

In addition to demonstrating financial need, all financial aid applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • be currently registered students of the University
  • be a first, second or third year student
  • be making satisfactory academic progress

 

Points to Note

Students must re-apply for Financial Aid each year to demonstrate eligibility.

All information on scholarships and bursaries should be obtained from the] Office of the Scholarship Coordinator.

The Financial Aid scheme and Earn and Study Programme are administered by the Office of Guidance and Counseling. Application forms are available in each department.
