Farquharson Hall

Farquharson Hall was opened in August 1965 and named in honour of the first chairman of the College Council, The Honourable Donald Farquharson. It was originally constructed to house eighty-eight students. However, with extensions in response to increasing demands, it now houses one hundred and forty seven students.

The hall, standing some thirty feet high, consists of three floors, A, B, and C. Each floor has its own set of bathrooms along with a gallery type kitchen. There are Lounge rooms on floors A and C and a Study room on the B floor.

Garvey Hall

Garvey Hall, named in honour of Mrs. Amy Jaques Garvey, widow of National Hero Marcus Garvey, was opened in 1971. The dormitory, constructed through funding from the World Bank Educational fund, was originally built to accommodate fifty (50) women but now houses eighty four (84).

The Hall consists of two floors ‘A’ and ‘B’. The communal setting provides a set of Bathrooms along with a galley type kitchen and dining room. A comfortable sitting area, equipped with a television set and VCR completes the facility.

Lome III Hall

These four blocks were constructed under the Lome III Regional Programme of the European Development Fund and were officially opened in May 1996. The Blocks were part of a project to provide housing for students at UWI, UTech and The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts.

Blocks ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘E’ house one hundred and fifty-two (152) women while block ‘F’ houses fifty-one (51) men. Each block comprises student groups of nine (9) or twelve (12). Each student group shares kitchen, dining and bathroom facilities.

Admission

As places are very limited, we have selected those applicants who we believe will make a real contribution to the university life through:

  • good example of personal integrity and academic performance
  • positive work attitudes and
  • contribution to clubs, societies, sports programmes and other student or community activities

A serious attempt will be made to maintain a balance in the allocation of places among faculties. Priority is given to first year students from overseas and the rural parishes.

Residence will normally be for the period August- May.

The Halls are closed during end of semester breaks. Housing for the summer usually begins in June and ends in August. Resident students requiring accommodation during this period must submit an application one month before the break and pay the prescribed fee.

Summer students interested in housing should submit applications within the same period as full-time applicants. (November-January).
