The Caribbean School of Architecture (CSA) conducts an urban studies programme by way of regional travel called Study Tours. Visits are typically two weeks and span the language and cultural diversity of the region.

This year the senior students of the Bachelor of Arts in Architecture degree and their lecturers Arq. Chris Whym-Stone and Arq. Jacquiann Lawton focused on the Colonial City of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The schematic city plan of Nicolas Ovando in 1510, is in principle Medieval and remains architectonic.

The architectural studies stratified urban morphology, and typology with emphasis on the symbolic function of historical artifacts. Rural to urban migration with rapid urbanization and the social and environmental effects on the city of Santo Domingo were discussed in tandem.

CSA was hosted by the School of Architecture at Universidad Iberoamericana . The Study Tour programme's dimension of Staff and Student exchange induced invaluable discourse and initiated a potential and meaningful relationship with the Dominican Republic.

Both groups of students UNIBE and CSA collaborated on a one day Charrette. The “mobile studio” intervened with a site in the Colonial City that was earmarked by the Colonial City Revitalization diagnosis prepared with the support of International Development Bank in 1999. The exchange and group dynamic presented varied contextual projections of contemporary Caribbean space with respect to a historical frame.

CSA wishes to thank, UNIBE President Gustavo Batista and the Architecture School Director Arq. Vencian Ben Gil as well as Arq. Lorena Tezano for establishing the exchange.

In addition, we thank the following organizations and persons for their time and professional support during the study:
