Programme Design


The course seeks to investigate the environment and to extract those component parts affecting land and building and to relate them to the needs of society. It is necessary to consider the resources used in satisfying those needs and the factors which expand or control the use of those resources. The aim of the course is to produce an understanding of the contribution made by all professionals concerned with land use and development. Through this understanding to ensure instinctive communication within the relevant field of specialization.

The programme is geared towards preparing graduates for a career in the Land Economy and Valuation Surveying profession by providing them with a systematic body of knowledge on the principles and practice of the management, use and development of real property. The programme’s emphasis is on concepts, principles and methods of analysis and application of these principles in problem solving.

Duration: Three (3) years – Full – Time: Four (4) years – Part - Time

Career information

The profession of Land Economy and Valuation Surveying includes the three distinct but kindred disciplines of surveying and mapping, land economy and quantity surveying & cost control. The scope of the profession covers the following:
• Principles and practice of planning, the allocation and use of land resources to meet economic and social demands.
• Management of proprietor interests in land for the individual proprietor, whether a private person, institution, corporate body or government department; and maintenance and repair of landed property.
• Valuation of all interests in land and other assets for various purposes.
• Evaluation of land resources and investments (property investment and development appraisals).
• Law and taxation relating to land.
• Land Administration, reform and policy.

Good human relations, as well as the ability to think logically and report on situations in an orderly manner, are important communicative skills since the building surveyor needs to develop a close working relationship with the architect, quantity surveyor, engineer and other members of the professional team.

 

Diploma in Land Economy and Valuation Surveying

Five subjects including: English Language and
Mathematics and three (3) other subjects in the
Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) general
proficiency level at minimum Grade 111
(acceptable since June 1998) or General
Certificate of Education (GCE) "O" levels at
minimum grade of "C”.

Selection Interview

All applicants who fulfill the entry requirement
satisfactorily will also be required to participate in a final selection interview in order to establish motivation and suitability for the course.
