Programme Design
This programme was developed in order to build on the diploma programme in Construction Management, Architectural Technology, Structural Engineering and Quantity Surveying. It is intended to provide advanced knowledge and skills in related technology, construction materials and systems, financial management, human resources management and team building, in order to improve the capabilities of graduates and to assist them to perform satisfactorily at a higher managerial level.
While building on the diploma programme, the BCM programme is much broader in scope and incorporates various aspects of design, project management, services engineering and road design and construction principles. In addition, it focuses on organizational behaviour, environmental impact assessment and various aspects of construction management including project analysis and financing, insurance, disaster mitigation measures and building systems. Decision making at the highest levels in the construction sector is stressed along with the importance of teamwork for effective and efficient project implementation.
Research is stressed as an important vehicle for understanding the nature and characteristics of construction both in terms of the technical and human aspects, which enhances performance and productivity in construction.
The programme provides a firm foundation for advanced studies in various areas of the construction industry. Students are exposed to a range of core courses including civil engineering technology, construction technology, services engineering, management in principle and management practice, professional practice, financial management, project finance and analysis, and research methods and practice.
Duration
The programme is offered as a post diploma programme and runs for four continuous semesters from September of the intake year to December of the following year (15 Months).
Career Information
Graduates of the BCM programme are well equipped with both technical and managerial competence that will enable them to perform in any related area within the construction sector. Examples include design, planning, development, construction management, rehabilitation and development control. Graduates generally enter the construction sector at the middle management level and can manage teams engaged in planning and construction of roads, building complexes, bridge construction, water supply systems and sewage treatment and disposal systems. These projects require fundamental knowledge of construction engineering and management principles and practice, as well as business management and human behaviour. The ability to assess projects and analyze technical and human requirements are important aspects of successful construction management and the programme provides these skills to graduates. Opportunities for graduates exist within both public and private sectors and they can be found in most large construction organizations.
Entry Requirements
Admission is based on previous qualification in one of the areas offered at the diploma level: Architectural Technology, Construction Management, Structural Engineering and Quantity Surveying, or an equivalent qualification. Graduates of other institutions will usually be assessed for equivalence.
