About the Programme
The Construction Engineering Diploma Programme is offered over six semesters in three years on a full-time basis. Each student is exposed to various aspects of Construction Management and Structural Engineering in the first two years.
The first year provides a foundation of basic knowledge of construction methods and techniques essential to understanding the later stages.
The second year builds on the foundations laid down in year one.
In the final year students specialize in either Construction Management or Structural Engineering and are concerned with the application of knowledge gained in the previous years.
Construction Management
Graduates from this option should be capable of:
• Organizing and managing the technical, financial and personnel aspects of construction sites.
• Supplying technical information regarding alternative construction methods and costs.
• Helping to work out tender figures for contracts.
• Programming and controlling a construction project.
Employment can be found in the Construction Industry as Project Managers, Site Supervisors etc.
Structural Engineering
Graduates from this option should be capable of: • Organizing and managing the technical, financial and personnel aspects of construction sites.
• Designing and detailing simple structures in steel, concrete and timber.
• Site inspection of structural members in buildings for satisfactory construction specifications.
• Interpreting structural drawings and details for the purposes of on-site construction.
• Doing simple on-the-spot structural calculations and sketches on site or in office.
• Represent Structural Engineer on site.
Employment can be found in the Construction Industry as Structural Detailers, Assistant Site Engineers in both public and private sectors. Construction Technician
The Construction Technician programme is a part-time/day release programme. It is designed to give general training in the major aspects of the construction industry, which are appropriate for persons already employed within the industry.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
The graduate should be capable of:
• Supervising on-site construction of building works.
• Supplying technical information regarding alternative construction methods and techniques.
• Helping to work out tender figures by providing relevant site data.
Employment can be found in Construction Industry as Assistant to Project Manager, Site Supervisor.
Duration: 3 Years (Part-time)
Requirements
Construction Engineering Diploma
Five (5) subjects including: Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry and one approved
Technical Subject at CXC General Proficiency Grades I, II, or III (from June,1998) or GCE ‘O’ Level minimum grade C or equivalent.
Construction Technician Certificate
Four (4) Subjects (Mathematics, English Language, Physics or Chemistry and 1 approved Technical Subject) at CXC General Proficiency Grades I, II or III (from June, 1998) or GCE ‘O’ Level Minimum Grade C.
Alternative entry paths may include a combination of PEC/PET Courses offered at community colleges. Mature applicants may also be considered.
