Bachelor of Science in URBAN & REGIONAL PLANNING

Mission Statement

The Urban and Regional Planning Division is committed to the delivery of high quality and relevant planning, education, and community service within the ambits of the vision of the University of Technology, Jamaica. To achieve this, the programme facilitates hands-on learning through collaboration with communities, practicing planners and allied professionals dedicated to the development of innovative approaches to address urban and regional issues in a sustainable manner.

Historical Background

The Urban and Regional Planning Division (formerly the Physical Planning Technology Division) was established in 1977, initially offering diploma, and degree as of 1991. This planning programme is the oldest in the English speaking Caribbean with approximately 350 planning graduates working in various capacities, in public and private agencies in Jamaica, the Caribbean, and else where.

About the Programme

The programme objectives are to:

a) develop an appreciation in students for the current and historical issues surrounding the practice of planning;
b) allow students to develop an understanding of the theory and practice of planning;
c) develop in students the capacity for original and analytical thought;
d) produce a planner with the requisite knowledge, skills and attitude appropriate for professional practice in both the public and private sectors;
e) train professionals competent in physical and socio-economic development planning as well as in sustainable development and management of natural resources in developing countries.

Programme Design

The programme structure is a four (4) year model comprised of eight (8
semesters, at the end of which graduates will earn a Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning BSc. (URP) No intermediate award. Past diploma graduates will be able to matriculate into the programme.


Mode of Delivery

The programme is delivered on a full time basis through lectures, studios, labs, practicals, student presentations, class exercises and field trips. In the near future, modular and part-time, day release components will be added.

Requirements

General university matriculation requirements for entry into the programme are:

• Passes in five (5) subjects in the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) general proficiency level grades 1,2, or 3 (grade 3 acceptable since June 1998); or General Certificate of Education (GCE) grades A,B,C. including passes in English Language, Mathematics, Geography and two (2) other approved subjects.

• Appropriate level of study in a recognized educational institution and relevant work experience. Applicants accepted by this route are required to submit academic transcripts and documented evidence of relevant work experience.

• Selected applicants for the programme may be required to satisfy a final interview.
