HISTORY
The
Faculty of the Built Environment was established in 1998 under the
new charter and statute of the University of Technology, Jamaica.
Whilst the Faculty may be new in name, its history goes back a long
way. It started in 1958 as a Construction Technology Diploma in the
Engineering Department of the then recently established College of
Art Science and Technology (CAST). The Department delivered a
full-time diploma and a part-time certificate in Construction
Engineering.
As demand
increased for widening training opportunities in Construction
Engineering and related disciplines, the Building Department was
established in 1978. The new department was made up of 6 divisions
delivering diploma and/or certificate programmes in Architectural
Technology, Construction (management and structures), Land Economy
and Valuation Surveying, Land Surveying, and Physical Planning
Technology.
For over 25
years, there had been discussions about the need to have a school of
architecture in the English-speaking Caribbean. In 1988 the
Caribbean School of Architecture (CSA) was instituted at CAST with a
regional mandate to deliver pre-professional and professional
programmes. Under CAST’s academic structure CSA was established as
the equivalent of another discrete department. The Building
Department and CSA, however, stayed together in the same place.
The Faculty
of the Built Environment now comprises two schools, namely, the
School of Building and Land Management (previous Building
Department) and the Caribbean School of Architecture. The schools
deliver a wide range of undergraduate certificate, diploma and
degree programmes together with a postgraduate diploma and a
Master’s degree. In addition faculty members are actively involved
in research and consultancy relating to issues of the Built
Environment.
