BBA in Human Resources Management
(HRM) (4 years - F/T & 5 years - P/T)

The BBA with a major in HRM will equip graduates with the requisite competencies to guide organizations in applying strategic thinking to hiring, leading training, motivating, and rewarding employees. As human resource specialists, they will demonstrate the value of optimizing human capital to enhance the profitability/viability of the business organization.

The students will begin to specialize in the third year, but will continue to do some more advanced general education and business core courses. The sequencing of HRM courses offered between the third and fourth years (full-time) are as follows:

Course Descriptions

Lower Level

Introduction to Management* (3 credits, 45 Hours)

This course exposes students not only to the traditional management techniques of control and limit of people, enforcement of rules and regulations, stability and efficiency, and the creations of top-down hierarchy to direct people and achieve bottom-line results; but also to the emerging management paradigm that recognizes that today’s managers need different skills to engage workers’ hearts and minds. There is a focus on leadership on harnessing people’s creativity and enthusiasm finding shared vision and values; and sharing information and power.

Upper Level

HRM 3120 - Industrial Relations (3 credits, 45 Hours)

This course provides an introduction to the concepts and issues related to the management of labour relations. The course explores the nature of industrial relations at the workplace, paying attention to the legal and behavioural dimensions of work relationships.

HRM 3112 - Staffing and Performance Management (3 credits, 45 Hours)

To provide students with the appropriate skills and competencies needed to engage in the design, implementation and evaluation of Human Resources plans, the recruitment and selection process, the performance appraisal process; and the appreciation of the critical role these functions play in organizational success.

HRM 4212 - Training and Development (3 credits, 45 Hours)

This course exposes students to the growing base of theory, research, and practical experience in Training and Development. By taking advantage of this knowledge and experience students will increase their effectiveness along with that of individuals with where they work and with the organizations of which they are part.

HRM 4221 - Compensation Management (3 credits, 45 Hours)

This course seeks to introduce students to the Strategic Management perspective of compensation. Also it seeks to give students an understanding of the nature of compensation and those issues that mark for effective compensation practices.

MAN 4410 – Selected Topics in Management (3 credits, 45 Hours)

Students will engage in a series of intellectual and application activities geared towards giving them experiences in assessing the importance and relevance of several emerging issues managers have to deal with as they seek to make their organizations gain and/or maintain competitive advantage in the 21st century globalized economy. The issues will vary from year to year with particular emphasis on multidisciplinary challenges that senior manages grapple with as they prepare their organizations for increased competition from national and multinational corporations. The issues will have global and topical significance for managers within the Caribbean region. Examples of such topics in the year 2002 are; Political Risk Management Strategies, Effective Change Management Skills, Gaining and maintaining Competitive Advantage through the effective management of human Resources, Creating High Performance Corporate Cultures, Designing and Managing Total Quality, Matching Organization structures with Corporate Strategy.

HRM 3111 - Introduction to Human Resource Management (3 credits, 45 Hours)

This course seeks to sensitize students to the value of the Human Resource to the success of the modern business organization. It provides students with opportunities to acquire knowledge skills and attitudes necessary for effective management as it relates to the management and development of the human capital.
