Introduction
The School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT)
is equipped with the latest computers to support the
academic pursuits of the students of the University of
Technology, Jamaica (UTech). These computers are located
in six laboratories. The software installed are for both
general application as well as course specific
applications. The computers in each lab are all
connected using a local area network (LAN) with access
to the Internet. The lecturers of SCIT provide the
necessary guidance to students of UTech as they seek to
bring the power of information technology as a
contributing factor to the enrichment of the learning
environment.
Facilities
There are approximately 150 desktop computers that are
located in six laboratories. These computers are
Pentium based machines. A wide range of software are
installed in these laboratories consisting of the
following:

Spreadsheets

Word Processing
ü
Desktop Publishing
ü
Simulation (Hardware and Network)
ü
Database Management Systems
The laboratories are opened 8am to 9 pm each day and
some are opened for 24 hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and
Fridays.
The machines in the laboratories are connected using
state-of-the-art Ethernet switches. The buildings are
interconnected over an ATM backbone using fiber optic
cables. There is also limited dial-up access to the
network. |
