Welcome to the Bachelor of Science Programme in
Computing and Information Technology (BCIT).
Serving as a catalyst to advance Jamaica's
position in the global village, this is a higher
education programme that has been designed to be
globally relevant. Most importantly, this
programme has been designed to expose you to
important areas of study in Computer Science and
Information Technology. I therefore encourage
you to be ready for the challenge, to be
motivated to achieve, to be inspired to excel
and to be driven to succeed.

Programme Outcome
National goals set
for the development of the IT sector in the year
2004 and beyond underscore the need for trained
personnel to occupy the following positions:

factors have been brought to bear upon the
original design and ongoing BCIT programme. They
also influence future directions for the School.
Programme Goals
The main goal of
the BCIT programme is to expose students to:

A wide range of
courses, which will enable then to become
well-rounded and well-cultured persons;

The rapidly
changing field of computing and information
technology and to

Inculcate a
forward thinking, proactive approach to the
discipline;

State-of-art,
cutting-edge technology in order to facilitate
productivity on entry to the industry;

A wide range of
theoretical and practical courses in computer
and information technology to equip them for
success as postgraduate candidates.
This is
accomplished by providing comprehensive
education and training, which incorporates
international directions; meeting national and
regional needs, and provides flexibility for
individual preferences.
Programme
Objectives
The BCIT programme
is designed to enable the graduate to:

Practice software
engineering expertly for foreign and /or local
markets, demonstrating professional marketing
and presentation skills.

Demonstrate high
levels of proficiency in the chosen minor,
whether hardware technology, networking.

Acquire knowledge
and skills in artificial intelligence, knowledge
representation and database technologies.

Be current on the
many aspects of the dynamic field of Computing
and Information Technology.

Demonstrate
excellent leadership skills in the area of
Computing and Information Technology in various
sectors of the environment.

Acquire a solid
foundation in computer programming, language
design and standards that would enable them to
learn any new computer language that they may
encounter in the work place quickly.

Perform
troubleshooting techniques that would enable
them to repair and maintain their computer
systems or at least diagnose computer related
problems.
-
Communicate
effectively, articulate ethical reasoning and be
able to analyze and resolve moral issues
pertaining to Information Technology.
Programme Structure
The BCIT Programme is a four-year degree;
upon completion students will be eligible for a
Bachelor of Science in Computing and Information
Technology.
