Academic Facilities

Electrical Power Lab

This laboratory is located in room 1A 2. The Power lab is equipped with Heavy-duty motors and generators, transformers and other devices for studying the electrical operating characteristics of equipment and to enable practical handling of equipment. In recent years several table model type equipment were acquired to support this lab, bringing a new dimension to this lab. These new equipment are very user friendly enabling students to “patch” the necessary circuit wirings for the application desired, in addition the a.c / d.c. motor & generators are constructed to enable students to view the internal structure / mechanism of the machinery while in operation. In so doing they develop a better understanding and appreciation of the equipment functionality.

Electrical / Electronics Labs

There are four laboratories that facilitate the conduct of other Electrical Engineering Science and Electronics. These labs are located at rooms. No. 1A 1, 1A 58, 1A 59, 1B 7.

Controls Lab

In this lab various computerized equipment / component are used to control / manipulate / and monitor peripheral devices representing models of industrial processes.

Instrumentation Lab

The Instrumentation laboratory is located at room 6A2.  In every sphere of activity there is some element of instrumentation occurring. Instrumentation is widely used in industries for automation and quality control of the processes. In this laboratory the aim is to demonstrate the measurement, testing, manipulation, and control of various signal process variables such as temperature, pressure, flow, conductivity, ph etc.

Telecommunications Laboratory

Housed in room 1A61 is the telecommunications laboratory, which is geared to expose students to the principles analogue and digital technologies used in transmission and reception of voice and data signals.

It has a fully furnished computer network and telephone PBX system, specifically for laboratory purposes.

Mechatronics Laboratory

In room 1B 9, the mechatronics laboratory is presently in a developmental stage, and shall enable students to combine the disciplines of engineering - mechanical, electrical / electronics and computing to explore and interact with robotic devices.

Kaiser Laboratory: room 1A 5

This laboratory houses the following two lab activities:

1. Fluid dynamics Apparatus and Hydraulic Benches fitted with various components of fluid flow and power circuits. These enable the investigation and demonstration of fluid flow / power characteristics.

2. Thermodynamic equipment including steam boilers, air compressor, steam engine and turbine. With associated or stand-alone apparatus properties of thermodynamic fluids, materials and equipment are investigated.

Machines & Structures Laboratory : room 1A 16

Various equipment enable the investigation of the principles involved in mechanical engineering science and static dynamic machines.

Strength of Materials Laboratory: room 1A 21

This houses equipment for determining strength and other characteristics of engineering materials in both destructive and non destructive procedures.

Tensile, torsional, hardness and stress measurements are all included.

Mechanical Machine Shop:   Room 1A10

Completely fitted with metal processing equipment for turning, shaping, milling and grinding.

Mechanical Workshop: Room 1A 11

This complements the Machine Shop with the necessary work benches, Wheel grinders, Drill presses, Saws, Arc- and Gas- Welding Plants and various Powered and Hand Tools.

Advance Machines Lab: Room 1A 12

This Lab is currently equipped with two (2) Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) Vertical Head Milling Machines and a Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) module, incorporating lathe, milling machine & a Robotic Handler with a separate Robotic Trainer.

Metallurgy Lab:    Room 1A15

This Lab is equipped with two (2) Vickers Metallurgical Microscope with photo-capture capability.  There is equipment for specimen sample mounting grinding & polishing and a programmable oven for metal treatment.

Metrology Lab:    Room 1A24

This is equipped with various measuring tools to impart the range and precision of measurements encountered at the workshop/machine shop level of general engineering processes.  Included are: Optical Comparator, Surface Finish Microscope, Precision Level and Clinometer.

Refrigeration Lab:    Room 6A1

This Lab is equipped with a number of modules that demonstrate refrigeration in various applications:

Air-conditioning – Automobile, Window units, Chilled Water System

Preservation – Chilled and Frozen application.

Internal Combustion Lab:    Room 6A3

Demonstration models are complemented by practical instrumented modules which facilitates various performance tests.  Available are: Petrol & Diesel Engines Gas Turbine (LPG- Fired), a Boiling-Heat Transfer module and other Heat-and-Mass Transfer Unit
