The Department of Liberal Studies (DOLS) offers a wide variety of courses in the Humanities and Social and Behavioural Sciences through which it seeks to assist in the creation of competent and innovative graduates who are good citizens and humane individuals. With these courses and related co-curricular activities it is hoped that students who enter this university will acquire the communication and interpersonal skills; the social and cultural sensitivity; and the global awareness that will enable them to function effectively at the workplace, and in the wider world.

It is increasingly evident that our society needs the skills, attitudes and knowledge fostered by DOLS. In response to this challenge we are poised to expand the department’s role in the institution by increased academic offerings and greater collaboration with schools and other departments.

As head, it is my aim to lead a team in building on the past achievements of DOLS and increasing its impact on the university community, and ultimately the wider world.
