COURSE TITLE

The Bachelor of Science in Dietetics/Nutrition – B.Sc. (D/N)

COURSE CODE: UBSDINUFTU1

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The B.Sc. (D/N) course aims to produce professional dietetics and nutrition knowledge workers, who will be globally capable, integral members of the health care team who can actively participate in the changing information driven health care services industry, having a direct impact on improving the quality of life for people.

In addition to nurturing mastery in the requisite professional competencies the curriculum will equip graduates to exhibit professional ethics and attitudes and perform supervisory and quality assurance roles in an environment, which stimulates creativity, maximizes student potential, and provides a foundation for more advanced studies.

COURSE DESIGN

A four-year full-time Undergraduate degree course comprising of a total of 137 credit hours completed over eight semesters.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES


Graduates of the B.Sc. (D/N) course will find employment opportunities as consultants, technicians, health counselors, food scientist, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, public relations, quality or product control managers as well as in other positions in community clinics, food industries, government and international organizations, health care institutions, the media, private practice, retail food services teaching and research.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENT

Eligibility of students for admission to the course will require:
- A minimum of five (5) GCE O’Level A, B, & C or CXC General Proficiency Levels 1, 2 and 3 (as of June 1998) in English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology or Food and Nutrition and any other subject.

- Attendance at a panel interview may be required.

- Candidates with other types of academic qualification will be evaluated in accordance with the University’s regulation on academic equivalency.

COURSE GOALS

The course is designed to:

- Produce graduates with the requisite knowledge, skills and professional attitudes to successfully function as proficient dieticians/nutritionists within the modern health care system locally, regionally and internationally.

- Produce broad-based, flexible graduates capable of functioning in the widening scope of professional roles and responsibilities including new, emerging and non-traditional job functions in a rapidly changing industry.

-Develop abilities in general education to achieve a rounded academic, professional and personal development including the familiarization with global standards/practices and effective collaboration.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon successful completion of the course the graduate will be able to:

-Apply for immediate entry into an approved internship or Post-Graduate course in the area of dietetics & nutrition.

-Provide nutrition care for individuals and groups through assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation and documentation.

- Utilize effective oral and written communication skills in the practice of dietetics/nutrition including the practical application of modern information technology.

- Provide nutrition education and counseling to consumers, clients and other professionals for health promotion, maintenance, treatment & rehabilitation.
- Participate in the management of food service operations to meet the food and nutrition needs of target markets.
