COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology aims to produce graduates with the requisite competency skills needed to operate as proficient medical technologists at the entry- or higher levels of this health profession. The curriculum provides training in the main professional disciplines, namely: Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Histopathology, Immunohaematology and Medical Microbiology with emphasis on developing professional ethics and attitudes while affording currency in knowledge, laboratory technologies, supervisory skills and quality assurance.

In addition, the curriculum provides the foundation for graduates to acquire abilities in general education and to achieve rounded academic and personal development.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Medical Technologists generally find employment in private or public clinical laboratories in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean region. In addition, graduates have found careers as research assistants in the areas of medical and nutrition research, and as laboratory personnel in the food and beverage industry.

COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must satisfy the following qualifications

  • A minimum of five (5) General Certificate Education (GCE) Ordinary Level A, B, & C or Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), General Proficiency Levels, 1, 2 and 3 (after June 1998) in English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and One other pass in an approved subject or their equivalent.
     
  • Pass a final selection interview.
     
  • Candidates with other types of academic qualifications will be evaluated in accordance with the University’s regulations on academic equivalency.
