The Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN)
COURSE CODE: UBSNURSFT
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The major focus of the BSN course is to graduate
professional nurses capable of functioning in the
demanding local, regional and international health care
systems.
The course prepares professional nurses as generalists
with the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to
assist individuals and groups achieve and maintain
health.
The course builds on a foundation of knowledge in
science, humanities and related professional disciplines
integrated with the body of nursing knowledge, assisting
the graduates to achieve analytical thinking in
professional practice.
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Graduates of the course having sat and passed the
Regional Examination for Nurse Registration (RENR) as
approved by the Nursing Council of Jamaica, should find
employment as Registered Nurses in the private and
public health sectors.
COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
5 GCE ‘O’ Level (A, B, or C passing) or CXC Level (1, 2,
or 3 (June 1998 and after)
- Compulsory Subjects
• English Language
• Mathematics
• Biology or Human or Social Biology, or Integrated
Science
And
• Any other 2 approved subjects
• Passes no more than 2 C or level 3 will be accepted
In addition, applicants are required to:
1. Submit a medical certificate (physical, dental,
ophthalmic)
2. Be age 17 and over
3. Do a pretest administered by the School of Nursing
4. Attend an interview and satisfy the selection
committee regarding suitability for entrance to the
nursing education course.
