LIBRARY RULES AND REGULATIONS

 
  1. The Library service is available to faculty, staff and students of the University.
     
  2. Other persons may apply to the University Librarian for permission to use the library. Such persons will be admitted, at the discretion of the University Librarian, for read only access, and use of the library will attract a fee.
     
  3. New students, faculty and staff are required to register at the beginning of each academic year by completing the appropriate form and presenting a VALID UTech identification card at the Client Services desk.
     
  4. To enter, clients must show a valid UTech identification card to the security guard or staff on duty. In the absence of a valid ID, a letter signed by the Dean, Head of School or Head of Department along with some other form of identification that has a photograph may be used.

    Other Clients must show a library card with an acceptable photo identification card.
     
  5. Hours or opening shall be determined by the University Librarian from time to time and will be posted in the Library.
     
  6. A bell is sounded half an hour and fifteen minutes before closing time. All loans must be completed during this time. Clients must leave the Library at the third bell.
     
  7. Clients are responsible for materials on loan to them and must pay for any loss or damage.
     
  8. Books must be returned on or before the last date stamped on the date label. Failure to comply will result in fines being levied.
     
  9. Clients will not be allowed to leave the Library with overdue books.
     
  10. Clients who are persistently late with returning books may be deprived of borrowing privileges.
     
  11. Students must pay all fines in order to be cleared for graduation.
     
  12. Fines are fixed by the University Librarian and are subject to change.
     
  13. Certain materials may only be removed with the permission of the University Librarian. These include reference books, materials and journals from the Reserved Material Collection (RMC), Caribbean Collection, periodicals and other special materials. All these materials are clearly marked with red or blue labels on the spine and are stamped REFERENCE.
     
  14. Books on two-weeks loan may be renewed for a further period of two weeks if they have not been reserved by other clients. Books may only be renewed once.
     
  15. Under special circumstances the University Librarian may recall a book before it is due for return.
     
  16. Bags, briefcases, pencil cases, pouches and handbags, small or large, are NOT allowed inside the library. They may be left in the area provided at the library’s entrance. They are left at the client’s own risk.
     
  17. No firearms, knives, or other weapons are allowed inside the Library
     
  18. Clients must conduct themselves in an orderly manner and must be as quiet as possible so that other clients can work without distraction.
     
  19. Smoking, eating and drinking are not allowed anywhere inside the Library. Therefore no food or drink of any kind should be taken inside.
     
  20. When leaving the Library, clients are required to show all books in their possession to the staff on duty.
     
  21. Clients are not allowed to re-arrange the furniture in the Library. Chairs and tables must be left where they are placed by the staff.
     
  22. Waste paper, pencil shavings and other trash, should be placed in the waste paper baskets provided. They should not be let on tables/carrels or thrown on the floors.
     
  23. Rules governing the use of library facilities, for example audio-visual theatre and cyber lab, shall be posted by the University Librarian in the relevant area.
