UTECH HOSTS BUILT ENVIRONMENT CONFERENCE
The Faculty of the Built Environment at the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech)
will host an international conference on “Built Environment Issues in Small Island States and Territories" from August 3 – 5, 2005 at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston.
The Conference is being hosted in the context of the World Summit on
Sustainable Development (WSSD) and in recognition of the special
circumstances that affect Small Island Developing States (SIDS), with
special reference to the role of academic institutions in issues affecting
the built environment. Among the issues to be examined at the Conference
is the peculiar vulnerability of SIDS from internal and external
influences including economic, social, cultural and environmental concerns
resulting from a range of inter-connected factors such as natural hazards,
energy importation, limited range of natural resources, land-use
decisions, physical and aesthetic sensitivity of conurbations and
townships, and other factors.
The Conference will examine a broad range of subject areas related to
matters such as Disaster Mitigation, Land Management & Land
Information, Urban-Rural Development, Environmental Management, Community
Development, Green Building and Energy, Construction Standards and Culture.
In light of the very active hurricane season with much of the Caribbean
being significantly affected, this Conference on the Built Environment is
particularly timely especially as it relates to how the region should now
respond in taking steps and making critical policies to mitigate the
severe environmental, social and economic impact of storms.
Presenters and delegates are expected from local, regional and
international agencies, implementing bodies and academic institutions. The
Public is invited to attend. Further information on the Conference can be
obtained through the Conference Secretariat, at 754-8311.
