UTech Hosts International Engineering Conference

 The University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) will be the host and principal co-sponsor of the 8th UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education (UICEE) annual conference on engineering education set for the Pegasus Hotel, in Kingston, February 7 –11, 2005.

 The conference under the theme: Bringing Engineering Educators Together, seeks to bring together partners, members, associates, students and supporters of the UICEE from all over the world to further discussions on issues of importance to engineering education.  It also provides an opportunity to strengthen the UICEE’s links and networks and set the stage for more innovative and collaborative ventures on a global basis.

 The theme: Bringing Engineering Educators Together, was chosen to facilitate personal interaction between academics involved in engineering education, to identify and present best collaborative programmes and projects, as well as examples relevant to the main theme.  There will also be the opportunity to address issues of concern and to discuss the status and quality of global engineering education.  Conference speakers will address a wide range of aspects of engineering education including: Effective methods of engineering education; Innovation and alternatives in engineering education; Multimedia and the Internet in engineering education and Research and development in engineering education in Jamaica and the West Indies.   Of particular interest to Jamaica is paper to be presented by Dr Rae Davis and Dr Gossett Oliver of the University of Technology, Jamaica that makes A case for the legitimization of various levels of engineering competencies under the Professional Engineering Registration Board (PERB) Act, Jamaica 1981.

 

Keynote speakers are well-known international experts on engineering and technology education and several papers will be presented by professionals in engineering education.  The UICEE will present its Outstanding Paper Awards to authors of papers included in the volume of Conference Proceedings.  The winners will be chosen by popular vote of Conference participants for offering the most significant contribution to the field of engineering education

 

The Hon. Maxine Henry-Wilson, Minister of Education, Youth and Culture will address the gathering at the opening ceremony on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at the Pegasus Hotel and there will also be exhibits from leading engineering and technology companies throughout the conference.

The UICEE is the world’s first and only centre for engineering education.  It was established in the Faculty of Engineering at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia in 1994, on the recommendation of the then UNESCO International Committee on Engineering Education.  The Centre is also the Secretariat for the International Liaison Group for Engineering Education (ILG-EE). 

Dr Rae Davis, President, University of Technology, Jamaica is the patron of the conference and the General Chairman is Professor Zenon J. Pudlowski, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia and Director, UICEE.
