UTech Establishes a Faculty of Law

The University of Technology, Jamaica is expanding its programme offerings with the establishment of a Faculty of Law. The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree will be the first course of study offered by the Faculty.  The first cohort of students for the LLB programme is expected to begin in January 2009.  Mr. Kent Pantry, CD, QC, former Director of Public Prosecutions, has been appointed to serve as Interim Dean of the Faculty.

Flexible Programme

The Faculty of Law will combine the UTech tradition of strength in interdisciplinary, theoretical and practical instruction.  The law degree aims to provide learners of all backgrounds and abilities with the opportunity to explore and develop their interest in the law and legal system of Jamaica and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).  It will allow those students interested in the practice of law, a flexible route to complete the academic stage of training in order to progress to the vocational stage of legal education or related fields.  Students have the option of completing the LLB degree in three years (full-time) or in four years (part-time) right here in Jamaica, at UTech.

Innovative Areas of Study

The course of study for the LLB will take an innovative approach to education, training and professional practice reflected in the teaching of modules such as entertainment law, sports law, and intellectual property that supports the emerging dynamic growth sectors of the economy.

The programme will be taught by a high quality cadre of local and international experts with interdisciplinary training and experience.  The programme will be delivered through lectures, tutorials, casebook methods, seminars and moots.  Students will be assigned to a Faculty Adviser for the duration of their undergraduate career in the Faculty of Law.

Entry Requirements

Applicants are required to have passes in at least five subjects including English Language and Mathematics at the CSEC General Proficiency Level with grades 1, 2 or Grade 3 (as of June 1998) or GCE ‘O’ Level with grades A, B, or C and passes in two subjects at Advanced level or CAPE Unit 2. Applicants can also gain entry after successful completion of a newly designed one-year UTech/ILE Pre-Law programme.

The UTech is also actively seeking to expand access to the Legal Education Certificate that is required to enable graduates with UTech LLB degrees to practice in the law courts of Jamaica and CARICOM.
