SPORTS Electives: Swimming
To compliment the vibrant
Learn to Swim elective programme at UTech, the Department has included a
Lifesaving option. The lifesaving option is taught in conjunction with the
Royal Life Saving Society of Jamaica (RLSS). The curriculum is based on
the necessary qualifications required to work in the local, regional and
international water sports industry.
The core components of the
course include, senior resuscitation and first aid, as well as the
essentials of lifesaving skills. In ad dition,
the course focuses on stroke development, fitness, and the supporting
activities that are required for the identification, assessment and actions
that can be taken to preserve life, prevent water incident and injury, and
the promotion of recovery.
Field trips are also
arranged for students to develop a keen understanding of open water/sea
scenarios to Lime Cay, where these skills are practiced and developed.
Upon successful completion
of the fifty-hour course, participants interested in working in tourism or
the water sports industry can apply to be certified by the RLSS (Ja.) who
are a active member of the International Life Saving Federation (ILSF) and
to be licensed by NEPA.
