50th Anniversary Gala Banquet

As you may be aware, the University of Technology, Jamaica celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.  Several events have been successfully staged to commemorate the event and we are indebted to our numerous stakeholders for the role they played in supporting the development of this noble institution and facilitating an exciting year of celebrations.

We are pleased with the measure of achievement thus far and look forward to maximize on the final opportunity in this regard at our 50th Anniversary Closing Banquet.  The Banquet will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 6:30 pm at the Hilton Kingston Hotel

This promises to be a stellar occasion where outstanding personalities will be presented with awards for their significant contribution to the Jamaican people and to the University.  The Most Honorable Edward Seaga, Pro Chancellor is slated to deliver the keynote address and attendees will include UTech Alumni, sponsors, diplomats, and other influential stakeholders.

We would be honoured to have you along with other members of your organization, family and friends  share the evening with us.  You are invited to purchase a table for $60, 000 to seat 10 persons or any number of individual tickets at a cost of $6,000 each.

PAST EVENTS

Road March
Date: January 31, 2008

Event Profile
The public launch will take the form of a road march and an official ceremony.  The parade will travel from the grounds of the Jamaica Society for the Blind at 111 ½ Old Hope Road into Matilda’s Corner and then up to UTech’s main campus in Papine where the celebrations will be officially launched by the Governor General.  The march will start at 10:00 am and will include members of the UTech community and marching bands and other external stakeholders, showcasing the institution’s various offerings and achievements.  This march should last for approximately 1 hour. 

We are also planning to stage our annual Papine/UTech Community Cultural Exposition on the front field of our Papine campus at 12:30 pm showcasing talent from the community.   This will be followed by a football match between UTech and UWI.

MOMA Symposium
Date:        February 29 - March 1, 2008

Event Profile

UTech in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, will host a Caribbean Symposium in Architecture at the Jamaica Conference Centre.

Under the theme “Caribbean Modernist Architecture" , the symposium is designed to encourage scholarly and curatorial awareness of modernist architecture in countries bordering the Caribbean.  The wealth of experience and intellect form the various countries of the region will make it a truly memorable event.  Participants will be drawn from countries such as Venezuela, Dominica, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Guadeloupe, and Trinidad.

Mr & Miss UTech Pageant
Date:        February 29, 2008

Event Profile

The Mr & Miss UTech Pageant is an annual event.  A special pageant will be staged for the 50th anniversary.  Males and females are judged in two categories based on awareness, talent, community service and ability to be UTech’s desired ambassador.  Contestants will be carefully screened and groomed in preparation for the coronation show.  There will be a rigorous judging before the show.  This preliminary assessment will have a strong weighting to facilitate ease and smoothness of the final show.  The show will be professionally staged and present the audience with an exciting, entertaining and inspiring mix of talent (glamour and substance embedded).

Anniversary Lecture
Date:        March 10, 2008

Event Profile

The Anniversary Lecture will be the most prestigious lecture for the year.  This will be geared towards a general audience (students, faculty, staff, general public).  The presenter will be an international personality who has distinguished him/herself in a field related to the chosen topic.  The topic is in keeping with the anniversary theme - A Golden Future: Technology, Innovation, & Entrepreneurship.

Research and Technology Expo
Date:        March 12 - 13, 2008

Event Profile
            
This is a special edition of the university’s annual Research and Technology Day.  The Research and Technology Expo will run for two days and will showcase research/technology base initiatives led by students, faculty and staff and their affiliates.  Though a young university, UTech has made significant advancement in applied research in a bid to fulfill its commitment to support national/regional development.  Viewers will be exposed to a wide range of possibilities for creating and sustaining wealth and improving quality of life overall.  The expo is being organized with support at every level from various partners in industries and institutions.

Event Profile

UTech is known internationally for its prowess in sport, producing some of the finest athletes in the world.  Celebrating our success in sport is among our major anniversary activities.  A most fitting tribute to our stellar athletes is an international sport event.  UTech 50th invitational track and field classic will feature athletes from: local and international universities, community colleges, high schools, preparatory & primary schools.

UTech 50th Anniversary International Conference on Business, Hospitality and Tourism Management
Date:        October 8 – 10, 2008

Event Profile

UTech in collaboration with University of Delaware will stage an international conference at Sunset Jamaica Grande under the theme:
“Globalization & Technology: Impact on Business, Hospitality and Higher Education”.  The conference is geared at local and international faculty members, practitioners in the private and public sectors.  Exhibitors form related companies are welcome to participate and expose participants to cutting edge technology and services in related fields.  Presenters will include leading faculty and business executives.
