Q: How may I register for the
online courses?
A: At
the end of the first pilot with the School of Architecture, you
will be invited to take credit and non-credit courses using an
online registration form and payment system.
Q: Will
my online courses be certified?
A: Yes,
your courses will be all certified by the University of
Technology, Jamaica
Q: How
will I be oriented and exposed to the course features and
techniques?
A: Once
you would have signed up to our courses, you will receive an
offline CD-ROM with demonstrations of the features of the entire
learning system. You will also go through an easy to use online
tutorial of the entire system.
Q: Which
computer skills will I need?
A: You
will need very basic computer skills such as using a keyboard
and a mouse. You should also be able to use the sound features
of your computer, the e-mail software and the tools for browsing
and searching the Internet.
Q: Which
computer hardware will I need to have?
A: A
Pentium or Power Mac with Windows 95, Windows 98 , Windows NT or
Macintosh system 7 or higher should be an adequate start. Other
minimum requirements would include a 100Mhz processor, 32Mb RAM
of memory, 100 Mb hard drive space, a 28.8 kbps modem, speed, a
sound card, a printer and a monitor.
Q: What
about software and tools?
A: A
word processing software is essential along with Internet
browsers such as Netscape and Internet Explorer 4.0 and higher.
An e-mail software is also important. You will be guided for
plug-ins and players which you will need for particular
applications.
Q: How
will I interact with my tutors and peers?
A: Tutor
and peer interaction will mix e-mail with discussion boards,
chat zones and where possible, audio and video conferencing. You
will use a suite of collaboration tools with your peers
including application sharing and collaborative project tools.
Q: How
may I access your digital library and other resources?
A: You
will be given special passwords and user names for accessing the
digital library and other resources. Once registered, you will
have full privilege rights to these resources.
Q: What
makes the online courses at UVL different from others?
A: Our
online courses will distinguish themselves based on relevance,
quality and a student-centred focus. The use of advanced and
appropriate technologies will be deployed in the courses using
culture-specific and tropical metaphors leading to a unique
learning experience.
