Message from the Accomodation Officer
Welcome, Welcome. As the Accommodation Officer, I take this opportunity to
welcome you to the Halls of Residence of the University of Technology, Jamaica.
Living in residence at UTech, can be a remarkable experience where you will learn
a great deal about yourself, be exposed to ideas and people that you have not encountered
before, make life-long friends, and become an active part of a very dynamic community.
It is our hope that you will feel supported, that you will have fun, that you will
learn a great deal, and quickly think of this University as your home.
With all these entertaining aspects, you may experience some challenges. You may
face obstacles that cannot be moved or problems that cannot easily be solved. However
as a team, we will find ways to cope and overcome. The impact of these obstacles
is all part of a process of becoming independent and self-sufficient, as well as
preparing for life’s ensuing challenges. Your success will be measured by how you
respond.
You will get most out of your residence experience by getting involved in your community.
Meet as many different people as you can. As G. Randolfa states. “Truly great friends
are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget”.
Maintain an open mind. Recognize your responsibility as a community member to work
with your fellow residents to ensure that everyone has a fun, educational and safe
experience. We depend on you to help us ensure that the residence experience is
positive for all who choose to live on-campus.
I hope that you will take the time to read this handbook so you fully understand
what is expected of you. Keep it handy so you can refer to it throughout the year.
It is full of important information that will assist you, and that you are expected
to know.
Please remember, living on campus is a privilege not a right; and every effort will
be made by the Residence Life staff to ensure everyone’s opportunity for success.
