PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION
The Multidisciplinary Bachelor of Health Sciences Degree Programme is based in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Technology, Jamaica. The programme is geared towards meeting existing personnel and occupational needs within the Health Care System and is designed to build on the experience and further develop the skills of health professionals who already work in the public and private health sectors.
The curriculum builds on previous academic credits earned over a minimum of two to three years full-time study on a variety of Health Sciences training programmes offered by recognised and approved training institutions.
The main programme objectives are to make available nationally and regionally, an undergraduate route of study tailored to:
- Assist health science professionals in upgrading their professional education to assume mid and higher level supervisory roles within the health services.
- Develop and expand their professional competence in both applied theory and clinical experience.
- Provide a training base for professional leadership as well as the upgrading of skills and competence in health Management.
- Provide a sound educational background for higher level studies.
TARGET GROUPS AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Admission to the post-diploma segment of the programme is restricted to graduates of UTech holding a Health Science Diploma or other approved equivalent level training programme outside of UTech. Specialty disciplines are Environmental Health, Nutrition/Dietetics, Medical Technology (Microbiology or Haematology or Clinical Chemistry) Radiography and Nurse Anaesthesia.
Note: Applicants with diploma or equivalent level academic certification in general business administration or management will be considered for the Health Services Administration option in Module III.
In addition to holding the UTech diploma or its equivalent health discipline certification, applicants must fulfill the following additional requirement:
Qualify for basic University matriculation requirements in English Language and Mathematics or an appropriate quantitative subject.
Note: Candidates over 25 year of age who do not hold a diploma, but hold some other acceptable health discipline qualification must in addition have a minimum of 5 years professional working experience. The University reserves the right to administer pre-acceptable evaluation tests to ascertain proficiency in English Language and Mathematics and /or other quantitative assessment areas.
