Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) in Construction Engineering
Programme Code: UBECOENFX
Programme Design
In the construction industry, advancing technologies, improved range and quality of materials and systems, and the increasing scope, size and complexities of building projects continue to demand higher levels of the technical, managerial and conceptual skills necessary to successfully complete these projects. The diploma in Construction Engineering (both Construction Management and Structural Engineering options) and the post-diploma Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering and Management continue to fill part of the demand, mostly in the planning, organization and execution aspects of the construction project. The Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Construction Engineering, requirements formulated under the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) stipulates a combination of maths and sciences, human and social studies, and engineering analysis and design, seeks to further improve the situation by equipping graduates with the skills to conceptualize, analyze, design and develop construction projects as well as plan, organize and control the successful implementation while being ethical, responsible and cognizant of the impact of engineering on the society from the environmental, economical, social and cultural standpoints. It is intended to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to meet the needs of the construction industry, particularly in the planning, design, management and implementation of complex construction projects. The theoretical and practical foundation laid by this programme is intended to help graduates build a professional career in Construction Engineering leading to professional development as an Engineer.
Duration: 4 years (post Advanced Level Studies)
Entry Requirements
In accordance with general University entry requirements, students entering the programme must have a minimum of:
Five subjects including: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one approved Technical subject in the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) general proficiency level at minimum Grade I, II or III* (*acceptable since June 1998) or General Certificate of Education (GCE) "O" levels at minimum grade of "C”.
AND EITHER
Three (3) subjects including: Physics, Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics (or a combined Pure and Applied Maths) and Chemistry at CAPE (level II) or GCE ‘A’ Levels at a minimum grade C.
OR
The successful completion of the one year Prerequisite Course of Study (PCS) with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.3.
Alternative entry paths may include a combination of pre-engineering courses (PEC/PET) offered at the Community Colleges and CXC/GCE and/or any other programmes/qualifications, which can be assessed for equivalencies.
