About the Caribbean Symposium in Architecture

The Department of Architecture and Design at MoMA and the University of Technology, Jamaica will collaborate for the first time to present an international symposium on the subject of Caribbean Modernist Architecture from February 29 to March 1, 2008 in Jamaica. Participants in the symposium will also be joining in the University of Technology’s 50th Anniversary Celebrations.

The symposium will offer two days of moderated talks at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston. Participants and discussants include practicing architects, architectural historians, and curators from fourteen countries (including Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, among others) to discuss issues involving modernist architecture in the region. Topics such as regional and international legacies, preservation, environmental sustainability, and urban planning will be addressed as they relate to modernist architectural history and contemporary practice.

Conference Theme

The theme, “Caribbean Modernist Architecture”, is aimed at encouraging scholarly, curatorial, and broader educational awareness of Caribbean modernist architecture and to assess the lessons for contemporary practice from this relatively little heralded architectural heritage. The symposium should provide useful research resources for future exhibitions and publications on the topic.

Who Should Attend?

The symposium can be attended by professionals such as architects, urban planners, lecturers in architectural education, interested parties like government representatives, representatives from restoration and financial institutions, artists, creative individuals, architecture students and those with a genuine interest in the way the environment and built spaces affect our daily lives.
