College of Health Sciences students and lecturers associated with the UTech, Jamaica Pharmaceutical Technology Students’ Association (UT-PTSA) on June 19, 2020  handed over well needed items  to The Jamaica National Children’s Home to assist them with efforts to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus.  The team donated sanitization and hygiene items including hand sanitizers, face masks and cleaning chemicals, as well as kitchen supplies, First Aid materials, personal care and laundry supplies estimated at a value of $75,000.

Mrs. Tieca Harris Kidd, Senior Lecturer and Programme Director of the BSc in Pharmaceutical Technology, COHS noted that given the proximity of the Children’s Home to the University’s Papine Campus, “ the University of Technology Pharmaceutical Technology Students’ Association felt compelled to adopt the Home especially during this time of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

The Jamaica National Children’s Home was established in 1972 and provides a home for orphans and abandoned children. They care for children (ages 7 to 18 years) with special need (severe mental and/or physical disabilities) whose parents are unable to provide proper care. Ms. Nadine Waugh, Director, who received the donated items, explained to the group that since a fire at the Home last year, (August 2019) the spirit at the Home and those they care for has been dampened. She also explained that a lot of sponsors have simply disappeared. They therefore welcomed the donation from the University of Technology, Jamaica.

The UT-PTSA extend thanks to sponsors on the community service initiative: Hughenden Pharmacy, Liguanea Lane Pharmacy, Monarch Pharmacy (Barbican), Super Valu Home Center Liguanea, and  to lecturers within the School of Pharmacy.  The students also express special thanks to their Programme Director – Mrs. Tieca Harris Kidd and Lecturer Liaison to the UT-PTSA - Mrs. Modupeola Abayomi and to key donors  from the School of Pharmacy : Dr. Andrea Daly, Head of School,  and Dr. Sean Moncrieffe, Lecturer,  for supporting them with this initiative.
