Team 3D Shopper Wins 5th Annual UTech, Jamaica Business Model Competition

Student team 3D Shopper comprising Rayvon Stewart, School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) and Shamarlia Jones, School of Business Administration (SOBA) copped first place in the 5th annual Business Model Competition (BMC) hosted by the Joan Duncan School of Entrepreneurship, Ethics and Leadership (JDSEEL), University of Technology, Jamaica.  The winning teams were announced at the finals of the BMC held on Friday, February 9, 2018 at the Technology Innovation Centre, Papine Campus where the four final teams presented their business models in front of a panel of judges, students and members of faculty and staff.

The winning team explained that 3D Shopper is a three dimensional avatar which can assist individuals to simulate their body size and weight, enabling them to purchase clothing online with more accuracy.

Second place team was Healthy Art – a SMART bandage which can detect inflammation in the joints which then releases natural ingredients to the affected area to help to relieve the pain. The team comprises SCIT students Alfanso Davidson, Gabriella Todd, Danee-Ann Royal, Kimall Burrell and Stephan Doyle. 

Third place winners were team Klick Chill – a beverage cooler innovation presented by JDSEEL students Shanika Feron, Perry Walker, Shanique Scott and Torian Wilson, while fourth place went to Candid Sorrell – a healthy snack made from the sorrel plant. Team members are Stephanie DeGouthe and Jay-Ann Heywood from the  School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (SHTM).

Category Prizes   

Category prizes were awarded for Best Utilization of the Business Model Canvas, International Market Potential and Most Innovative Venture which were all awarded to team 3D Shopper.  Category Prize for Most Developed Prototype was awarded to Candid Sorrel.

Cash Awards

Cash prizes were awarded to all teams.  First place received $400,000, second to fourth place received $200,000, $100,000 and $75,000 respectively.  The teams also received gift packages from sponsors, Joan Duncan Foundation, Development Bank of Jamaica (DBJ), Linstead Market Jamaica and NCB Foundation

The four teams will go on to participate in the highly competitive National Business Model competition scheduled for March 21 – 23, 2018 organised by the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ).

Mr. Michael Steele, Head, JDSEEL in his welcome emphasized that the Business Model Competition promotes new ideas and solving problems for developing countries like Jamaica.  Teams are assessed on the validation of their hypothesis and assumptions; product development and presentation skills and the use of the Business Model Canvas in demonstrating their key partners and activities, value propositions, customer relationships, as well as cost structure and revenue streams.

The judging panel for the BMC finals comprised Mr. Dale Seaton, Portfolio Manager, Commercial Products, Retail Banking Division, NCB, Ms. Sharon Gibson, CEO, JMMB Group Money Transfer Limited, Dr. Andrea Barrett, Lecturer, JDSEEL, Prof. Paul Golding and Ms. Dianne Plummer, Lecturer, School of Engineering and Entrepreneur/Founder, True Shade Cosmetics.
