UTech, Jamaica Receives Donation of Printers from Massy Technologies

The University of Technology, Jamaica, School of Computing and Information Technology (SCIT) on Friday, December 15, 2017 received a much welcomed donation of three Sharp Multi-function printers for use in the School’s computing and information technology laboratories.  The printers were presented at a special handing over ceremony held at one of the three new IT laboratories at the Shared Facilities Building, Papine Campus.  During the ceremony, both entities also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will further extend a decade-long partnership.  Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, UTech, Jamaica and Massy Technologies’ collaboration will include student internships, research projects and technology initiatives.

Professor Stephen Vasciannie, CD, President, UTech, Jamaica expressed gratitude to Massy Technologies for donating the printers valued at $800,000. He also thanked Massy for the on-going accommodation of University of Technology, Jamaica SCIT students through an internship programme over the years which has resulted in the employment of 15 SCIT graduates to date at the company, two of whom were present at the ceremony -  Mr. Shane Barnes,  Manager Professional Services and Mr. Duane Williams, Team Leader,  Software Services who both graduated in November 2017 with the Master of Science in Information Systems Management – Enterprise Security. 

The President noted that the partnership with Massy will “enhance the University’s capacity to provide our students with every opportunity for knowledge sharing, development of technical competencies and experience in applying knowledge to problem-solving.”  He commended Dr. Sean Thorpe, Head, School of Computing and Information Technology and his team for their hard work in supporting this thrust.

In his brief on the UTech, Jamaica/ Massy collaboration, Dr. Thorpe reiterated appreciation to Massy Technologies.  He noted that the internship opportunities for SCIT students within the company over the last ten years have been tremendously beneficial.  Noting that the School of Computing and Information Technology and members of Faculty by extension are very proud to extend this kind of partnership, Dr. Thorpe expressed confidence that there will be many more opportunities within the near future for further collaboration with Massy Technologies.

Mr. Wade Marsh, Head, Technical Support Services, Massy Technologies Infocom Jamaica Limited who brought greetings on behalf of Mr. Anthony Smith, CEO, Massy Technologies said that the continued collaboration with the UTech, Jamaica will benefit both entities “to further develop and expand opportunities for synergies between the business and academia ecosystem which is necessary in the technological space,”  adding that the signing of the MoU marked only the beginning of much more collaboration with UTech, Jamaica in this regard.
