The Library has a wide range of materials covering all subject areas offered by the University. The collection currently consists of approximately 105,000 books, and over 9000 electronic journal titles, a range of pamphlets, multi-media materials, past examination papers and back issues of journals. The Books and printed Journals are arranged on the shelves according to the Library of Congress Classification Scheme.

REFERENCE COLLECTION:
A quick Reference Collection is located on the Ground floor behind the Client Services Division. This collection includes:
- Dictionaries
- Encyclopedias
- Handbooks
- Directories
- Manuals
- Atlases
They are all labeled “REF” and are for use in the Reference Section only. Clients should replace them on the shelves after use.
RESERVED MATERIALS COLLECTION (RMC):
Located in the Client Services Division, this is a core collection of:
- Prescribed texts
- Highly recommended books
- Frequently used materials such as:
- Past examination papers
- Newspaper clippings
- Pamphlets
These materials are for use in the library only.
The RMC Catalogue should be consulted and the relevant form filled out and handed to the staff at the circulation desk who will locate the material for you.
CARIBBEAN COLLECTION:
This collection houses material published about the Caribbean, including Guyana and Brazil or by Caribbean Authors. Copies of final year students projects and theses are also housed in the collection.
The Library is a depository for the Pan-American Health Organization, and as such these publications form a part of the Caribbean Collection.
How to access
Caribbean materials are housed in closed stacks. To locate an item, use the catalogue and submit request to staff at the desk. Materials must be used in the Caribbean Reading Room.
PERIODICALS:
The Library subscribes to both print and electronic journals. The printed collection is located in Reading Room I on the ground floor at the southeastern side of the library. This includes;
- Journals
- Magazines
- Newspapers
- Annual reports
The Jamaica Gazette containing Bills and Acts can be found in this collection.
The Visible Index in the Periodical Section lists the journals alphabetically along with the assigned call number. The journals are arranged on the shelves according to call number.
Caribbean Journals are not found on the open shelf, but must be accessed in the Periodical workroom.
The Archives
The Archives form an important part of the library’s resources. In this section. Academic Board/Council Papers/ Reports, other documents and records of past activities of the university are housed.
How to access
Materials in the archives can only be used there. They are not available for loan. Opening hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.
There is a small collection of plans in the Plan Files located outside the Archives. These are university related and may only be used with the Librarian’s permission
