UTech, Jamaica 2015-16 Annual Report

LINKAGES Summer Workshops SOTAVE collaborated with the Jamaica Teaching Council to offer several workshops between July and August 2015. Workshops were held in lesson plan preparation, assessment practices, improving teaching in computer studies, mathematics, and industrial technology (Auto CAD and Lab Organization and Management Several members of the mathematics unit in FOSS presented that workshop. Over 300 participants were involved over the period. Mathematics and Science Educators Dr Leonie Clarke represented UTech, Ja in the MOEYI’s initiative to increase the number of fully qualified Math and Science and TVET teachers by 2021. UTech, Jamaica co-leads the technical and vocational education aspect with Sam Sharpe Teachers College. Mission Catwalk 2014 The filming of the 5th season of Mission Catwalk began on June 16 2015 and ran until July 4, 2015. This collaboration provided a good opportunity to promote the fashion programme in the Eastern Caribbean and in schools throughout Jamaica. The season was aired in September 2015. Footage from the series was used in an advertisement which was produced by the BA CAT unit in the faculty. Intern from Ryerson University Ms Jacqueline Smith, fashion intern from Ryerson University, Canada completed four weeks of internship in fashion in the FCS programme. This represents the start of such collaboration in FCS. Third Stream Income - media coverage opportunities The BACAT unit provides media services across the university. Between December 2015 and May 2016 the BCAT Media Service provided coverage of 10 events. A total of approximately $300,000 is expected to be earned from these activities Linkages The Spanish-Jamaican Connection Once again the Embassy of Spain committed to sponsoring six (6) UTech, Jamaica students to sit the DELE A1 examinations in May 2016. The Spanish Ambassador visited UTech in April, 27, 2015 for the Students who participated in the STEM Education camp pose with their energy efficient building prototype which utilized STEM methodology in its creation.
