UTech Alumni Association Announces Plans for Annual 5K Walk, Run for Excellence

….to raise funds for needy students

The  University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech, Ja.) today, Friday, October 20, 2017 announced plans for the staging of the second annual UTech Alumni 5K Walk, Run for Excellence.  The annual charity event aimed primarily at raising funds to assist financially challenged UTech, Ja. students is scheduled for Sunday, November 5, 2017. 

Prof. Colin Gyles, Deputy President in his welcome thanked the Alumni Association for spearheading the second staging of the event and encouraged wide support from UTech, Jamaica students and staff.  He noted that the 5K is in keeping with the University’s thrust to preserve and enhance sport performance as well as good physical and mental health.  

Miss Sharon Smith, Vice President, Marketing and Public Relations, UTech Alumni Association and main organiser noted that the UTech Alumni is committed to using the annual Run, Walk for Excellence to contribute to the development of excellence.  She shared that  funds raised go towards providing support for needy students that have “displayed an impressive level of discipline and a penchant for hard work, but who are put at severe disadvantage in their quest for excellence owing to financial constraints.”  

 Overview of the Meet

Race Director, Mr. Alan Beckford provided an overview of the 5K Walk/Run for Excellence.  The Meet will commence at the UTech, Jamaica Papine campus at 7:00 am and proceed through the community of Hope Pastures, its immediate environs and the Hope Botanical Gardens before ending at the front field, followed immediately by the awards ceremony at the Papine campus.  The race results will utilize the European tag timing system  which uses RFID tags to provide precise timing. 

Registration

Registration is now open and will close on Saturday, November 4, 2017.  Participants may register online at www.my.raceresults.com or pay at any Paymaster branch and complete an application form at the 5K Secretariat located at the Department of Sport, UTech, Ja. Papine campus.  Registration costs are UTech, Ja. students with ID - $500; students from other institutions - $1,000, UTech, Ja. staff and the general public - $1,200.
